Your First Visit at Filgiano Dentistry

A first dental appointment should feel clear and manageable. At Filgiano Dentistry, we keep your first visit calm, patient-paced, and focused on understanding your needs before recommending anything. This page walks you through what happens, how to prepare, and how we plan next steps together.

Step 1

Medical and Dental History

We begin by collecting your medical and dental history. This helps us understand your background, risk factors, and anything we should consider for your safety and comfort. You can complete these forms in the office, and in many cases they can be completed online ahead of time so you don’t have to print anything or remember to bring paperwork with you.

Step 1

Step 2

A Complete Oral Exam

Next, we perform a complete oral exam. This includes checking your teeth, gums, bite, and the soft tissues in your mouth. If you’ve come in with a specific concern, we’ll focus on that too, and explain what we see in plain language.

Step 2

Step 3

X-rays If They’re Needed

X-rays are not automatically required for every patient, but they may be recommended when we need to see areas that aren’t visible during the exam. If x-rays are needed, we’ll explain what we’re looking for and why it matters.

Step 4

Review of Findings and Next Steps

Once we’ve gathered the information we need, we sit down with you to review what we found. This is your time to ask questions and tell us anything you want us to know. We’ll explain options, priorities, and what can reasonably be planned now versus later.

If You’re Nervous About the Dentist

You’re not the only one who feels anxious. Many adults carry stress from earlier experiences, and it can be hard to bring it up. We take anxiety seriously and will treat you with patience and respect.

In some situations, nitrous oxide may be an option to help reduce anxiousness during care. If this is something you want to discuss, let us know in advance so we can talk it through.

What to Bring to Your First Visit

If you’re not sure what’s helpful, here’s a simple checklist:

  • A list of medications and any relevant medical conditions
  • Any dental insurance information you’d like us to reference
  • Notes about symptoms (what you feel, where, and when it started)
  • Questions you want answered, even if they feel small
  • Any prior dental records or x-rays, if you have them available
